Hello and welcome to my presentation about the evolution of dogs …. chose this topic because i have a dog myself and I really like dogs. The dogs descend from the Canis Lupus (komisch dass das übersetzt wolfshund heisst...) the grey wolf. He belongs to the family of caniden. The family of the Caniden can be traced back about 30 million years.
The first representatives of dogs came from North America and got from there to Europe, Asia and Africa. Then they spread further to Europe, Asia (nochmal?), North Africa and North America. A million years ago humans and wolves were successful hunters, conquering the whole globe. It is not clear whether men joined the dogs or the dogs joined the humans … but fact is that they allied (gespr. = ällaid) to improve their ways of hunting.
While humans and wolves were hunting together, the look and nature of the wolves was changed. The first thing that was changed was their behaviour towards the humans they lived with. Their dislike towards men stopped and they now managed to live in harmony. The second change was their look. For example the colour of their fur altered from grey to various other shades.
An other several million years after that their....... (was sollte asthenic heissen?) also changed. From then on dogs became a very usefull and domestic animal.
In some cultures the dog was even regarded as a status symbol.
But without men dogs would never have developed into those dogs we nowadays know.
Today the dog is a sub species of the grey wolf. Wolves, coyotes and jackals belong to the type of Canis, too.
